The Application Resource Monitor is one of those BlackBerry apps that should have been on legacy BlackBerrys since v4.1. BlackBerry has improved it greatly since it first launched with OS 7.0/7.1 and has now brought it up to v3.0 in the Beta Zone. This new version provides you “with a list of easy intelligent actions you can take to free up memory in one fell swoop.” That includes uninstalling unused applications, deleting or moving large media and document files, and deleting old text and email messages.

Vodacom in South Africa revealed this week that they have almost double as many BlackBerry phones on their network as Android, iPhone, and Windows Mobile devices combined. They told MyBroadband.co.za that there are currently 3.1 million BlackBerry phones, 1 million Android smartphones, 600,000 iPhones and 150,000 Windows mobile devices on its network. This is an example of one of those emerging markets that BlackBerry needs to capitalize with the BlackBerry 10 devices and especially so with the BlackBerry Q5.

The problem is that BlackBerry growth is slowing at 100,000 additions a month compared to Android (200,000) and iPhone (200,000) monthly growth. BlackBerry needs to infuse a low cost Q5 into that market to reinvigorate it while it still has a dominating lead.

BBM Money launched in late February for Indonesian BlackBerry users. It allowed them to transfer money over BBM through its peer to peer mobile payments service. The service is a partnership of BlackBerry with Indonesian Bank Permata along with Astra International. They all announced today that they have hit 60,000 registrations in 90 days which puts them on track to their target of 200,000 by the end of 2013.

The BBM Money service allows users to instantly create an account from their BlackBerry and make real time payments to anyone from wherever. Users can also use the money to buy more airtime credit or transfer the money out to bank accounts. Its also available to all users even if they do not have a Bank Permata account. They also went on to explain how BlackBerrys are still more than half of all smartphones sold in market.

Personally I am curious if BlackBerry will use their cross platform move onto iOS and Android to bring mobile payments to those platforms and monetize BBM… I am sure Google and Apple would try to block such a move but it would be an interesting one.

Service launched with BlackBerry creates low-cost customer acquisition opportunities for PermataBank

22nd May 2013. Mobile Money leader Monitise (LSE: MONI.L) has announced the early success of BBM Money, the P2P mobile payments service launched through its Joint Venture with Astra International (AGIT Monitise Indonesia) in partnership with Indonesian financial institution Bank Permata(PermataBank) and BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY; TSX: BB). Since going live at the end of February 2013, the service has attracted more than 60,000 registered users towards its end of 2013 target of 200,000.

BBM Money gives BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) customers in Indonesia the ability to instantly create and access a Mobile Money account from their BlackBerry smartphone and make real-time payments to their BBM contacts who are also signed up to the service, at any time from wherever they are.

The simple and secure service also enables users to buy mobile airtime credit and transfer money to bank accounts.

Uniquely the service is integrated with BBM itself, allowing the user to be in a chat, make a peer-to-peer payment and return to the same conversation.

BBM Money can be used by consumers with access to the service regardless of whether they have a PermataBank bank account.

PermataBank Retail Banking Director Lauren Sulistiawati commented, “We are delighted with the level of customer adoption that we have experienced so far.”

“The popularity of the service is another indication that mobile plays a key role in the future of the banking and payments industry across Indonesia.”

The BlackBerry Q10 is one step closer to launching in the US next month. N4BB spotted the BlackBerry Q10 show up in the Verizon Inventory System as the BlackBerry Q10 Nashville this week. That usually means it is a few weeks until launch so early June seems right. It is also showing up in black AND white options so it looks like Verizon is definitely getting the white model. I wonder if it is an exclusive again like the Z10…

I have been wondering if BlackBerry would be continuing their relatively successful Porsche Design line with BlackBerry 10 and so far we have not heard anything. Oddly enough Porsche Design has released a new variant of the classic Porsche Design BlackBerry P’9981 this time coated in 24 carat gold on top of titanium and stainless steel casing. The back also has leather and a solid gold block with the model number. What’s even more interesting is that the gold version will only have 25 handsets made so I can only imagine the cost… Either way you can try to get one when it launches in June. Former BlackBerry Co-CEO and founder Mike Lazaridis went on record this week on BBM coming to iPhone and Android. It was always rumored that Jim Balsille was pushing for BBM to go cross platform but it seems like Mike Lazaridis also agreed with him. That makes me wonder who was against it…

Still Mike Lazaridis told Bloomberg that “he’s confident that users of iPhones and other devices will embrace the company’s BlackBerry Messenger platform.” He went on to state that “BBM is by far the most compelling wireless experience and wireless social-networking environment” and that Thorsten Heins is “speaking to the confidence he has in the platform, not only is BlackBerry back in a big way with BB10, he’s also showing he can expand that vision to other platforms.”

Lazaridis has also confirmed that he has already invested in a couple of companies with his new Quantum Valley Investments fund of $97 million but declined to mention which. Check out the details over at Bloomberg.

As we await the Q10′s arrival in the US market, the question of how popular it will be is on everyone’s minds. The Z10, of course, met the needs of touchscreen lovers, but are there enough people who will like the Q10 to justify its existence and help keep BlackBerry afloat? Well, it looks like there’s reason to think so.

Recent polls on TechRepublic suggest two pieces of information about former and current BlackBerry users. First, among BlackBerry users, 76% say that the Q10 is enough to keep them loyal. And second, almost 2/3 of BlackBerry lovers who converted to Android or iPhone devices are tempted to switch back because of the Q10.

To me, it’s not perfectly clear what to make of these numbers. As pointed out on ZDNet, “[t]his is a self-selected poll so the numbers likely skew a little high for people interested in this topic.” While this is a self-selected poll, I’m not sure his conclusion is correct. I have certainly seen people – including former BB addicts – seemingly jump at the opportunity to knock BlackBerry, which could mean that the numbers are skewed toward people with negative passion for BlackBerry (which would mean that the Q10′s appeal is higher than is reflected in the numbers).

On the other hand, I’m not sure what the numbers really mean. We know about the user exodus from BlackBerry over the years. If we assume the poll numbers are accurate, is it actually good news that 76% of the loyal BB users who didn’t run away anticipate remaining loyal? I’m not so sure.

With regard to the other poll – the one that says 64% of people who left BB are tempted to switch back for the Q10 – I do think that it’s good news. Winning back customers is very important for BlackBerry and the fact that most of those who left are tempted to return has got to be a positive.

The fact is that these polls were far from scientific. It’s not clear to me what kind of biases they might reflect and what the real numbers are. But they seem to show that the Q10 has caught the eyes of many current and former BlackBerry users, and I guess we should call that good news.

Sprint has hinted in the past that it had some more plans for BlackBerry 10 devices beyond the Q10. They decided to not offer the BlackBerry Z10 which is an odd choice but they are releasing the Q10 shortly. Now they have confirmed this yet again in an interview with CNET. Lois Eichelberger Fagan, director of product portfolio at Sprint Nextel, stated that “we are not done with BlackBerry” and that “there’s more to come.” The new product would be released by the end of the year which could be the flagship phone BlackBerry CEO, Thorsten Heins, hinted to previously.

Fagan also stated that Sprint originally considered carrying both the Z10 and the Q10 but said the timing was not right. Sprint decided to focus on the Q10 when they realized there would be a gap between device launches.

Android ports on BlackBerry 10 are nowhere near ideal and any user could have told you that. Its reassuring to know that Alec Saunders, head of BlackBerry developer relations, is aware of the issue. He told CNet that "From a commercial perspective, users hate them… Our partners who have ported apps get dinged for them." Alec explained that it is all about momentum. The last 50,000 of the 120,000 current apps in BlackBerry World were created over the last 4 months. Android ports are a quick way to get companies to test out BlackBerry 10 and gauge interest it “is not the ideal situation.”

That is why I am glad to see apps like Songza realize that it is time to go native. They have confirmed that they are working on a native app due to user demand. This is exactly the kind of process that Alec is counting on to onboard large developers to BlackBerry 10.

How do you think the BlackBerry 10 Android runtime is helping get apps to BlackBerry 10? Personally I am a huge fan of a few apps I have ported myself including Google Maps and my Chase bank app.

Unity has decided to shake up the multi-platform gaming engine market they play in with a free offer of their mobile publishing tools. They are allowing individual developers and startup studios to download Unity free. The only people who will have to pay are companies and incorporated entities with a turnover in excess of $100,000 in their previous fiscal year. That way Unity can allow companies to grow into very profitable businesses before having to pay licenses. They promised that this new free option will be available for BlackBerry 10 “in the coming months” so stay tuned to BerryReview and we will let you know!

The wait for Singapore users is finally over. After the long wait, OS 10.1 is now officially available for Singapore users on Singtel, the country’s largest mobile network provider. For Starhub and M1, the other network providers, we are hearing that it is coming very soon to them.

UPDATE: It is now available on all 3 telcos!

To check for updates, simply go to settings and head to software updates and tap check for updates! The update is over 300mb in size, so do make sure you have both power and is connected to the WiFi network!

Note that this OS is not as new as the latest leak, but is the latest supported officially by the telecoms.

AT&T has long been known for their policies that annoy customers one of which is requiring the built in video chat apps not work over cellular on unlimited plans. They did open the door for video chat apps over Mobile Share or Tiered limited data plans but thankfully they are not stopping there. They have confirmed that they will be opening up video chat apps over cellular regardless of data plan or device as long as the device uses LTE.

Check out the statement they gave to The Verge:

For video chat apps that come pre-loaded on devices, we currently give all OS and device makers the ability for those apps to work over cellular for our customers who are on Mobile Share or Tiered plans. Apple, Samsung and BlackBerry have chosen to enable this for their pre-loaded video chat apps. And by mid-June, we’ll have enabled those apps over cellular for our unlimited plan customers who have LTE devices from those three manufacturers.

Throughout the second half of this year, we plan to enable pre-loaded video chat apps over cellular for all our customers, regardless of data plan or device; that work is expected to be complete by year end. Today, all of our customers can use any mobile video chat app that they download from the Internet, such as Skype.

T-Mobile has really changed things up with their new way of subsidizing phones with no contract. Nerdberry noticed T-Mobile has followed AT&T’s footsteps by launching a consumer preregistration page for the BlackBerry Q10. The new page lets you enter in your email address for updates but adds a twist. They have set the off contract price of the BlackBerry Q10 as $579.99 or with their weird payment plan of $99 down and $20 a month for 24 months which will cost you the same thing at the end of the day.

BlackBerry has teamed up with Media Mushroom to create a slick solution for migrating your contacts from an iPhone or Android to BlackBerry 10 if you do not have a cloud contact solution like Gmail or Exchange. You just need to install the app on both devices and then connect them to the same Wi-Fi network.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is regularly known for making some off base comments. His latest was to CTVnews in Canada when asked if he has tried one of the new BlackBerry 10 devices. Here is the exact question and answer:

CP: You’ve been quoted as saying that you’re always trying out a new smartphone or tablet to keep up on new technology. Have you tried one of the new BlackBerry 10 devices yet?

Hastings: No. Like many people I was a BlackBerry addict from 1997 or 1998 through to the iPhone but I haven’t tried it. We don’t currently support streaming on the BlackBerry, it’s a unique operating system you have to target, and unfortunately there’s just not enough volume for entertainment (apps). It’s a great device for getting work done but people don’t interact with it as an entertainment device the same way they do with say an iPhone or Android phone.

I really think Hastings has not tried either of the BlackBerry 10 devices especially considering the fact that they are some of the only devices with built in HDMI ports for entertainment. It does sound pretty out of touch and I really hope BlackBerry has someone hand delivering a BlackBerry Z10 to Hastings with loads of entertainment apps preloaded…

If you have visited BerryReview since the BlackBerry Live keynote last week you may have noticed a nice speed boost. Our awesome hosts at MediaLayer did a beautiful and seamless upgrade of our main server. For those spec geeks out there we are now running on an Intel Xeon E3 1230v2 (3.3Ghz/3.7Ghz quad-core) with 8GB of RAM packing some beautiful SSDs instead of our previous 15K SAS drives.
