BlackBerry Messenger Used To Facilitate Disaster Recovery Efforts In Emergencies

After a series of flooding, the City of Waterloo decided to ditch emailing and head on straight to BBM. This created a better way to centralize communications with the disaster recovery teams as they found communicating via email made communications disjointed and delayed.

The employees activated emergency BBM™ Groups ahead of the ice storm to stay connected and communicate in real time with key groups of people. This enabled communications to be streamlined, drastically improved response time, collaboration and critical communication. For example, the forestry team could be informed via the BBM Group that a fallen tree needed clearing, and they could respond in real time.

In fact, they have also created a mobile application called Ping Street to enhance service delivery to residences. The first-of-its-kind BlackBerry mobile application provides Waterloo citizens real-time access to location-based information including garbage and recycling calendars, construction detours, road closures and more.

Now, if you asked me, how I wished people in my country decided to turn to BBM. Each service here is so fragmented, with cab application working solely on android, initiative for blind only for Apple, haven’t they thought of doing everything in one central location like this? But sure, they hate BlackBerry like Reuters.
