BlackBerry Parental Controls for Apps Show Up in Latest OS Leaks

Parental Controls Parental Controls2

BlackBerry owners for years have been asking me for a way to lock down certain applications from their kids and others. Until now other developers have stepped into that gap offering apps that lock one or more applications from running by using a password. Phil at OSBB noticed that the latest OS 7.1.0.402 leaks include a new Parental Controls feature under the security tab. This new feature lets parents lock down access to the:

  • Phone
  • Limit incoming calls to contacts
  • Text Messages
  • Bluetooth File Transfer
  • Location Services
  • Browser
  • YouTube Uploader
  • Application Installations
  • Email Account Setup
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Camera
  • BlackBerry Messenger
  • Google Talk

I know third party apps provide quite a bit more flexibility but this will allow parents to block access to the browser if they want. Hopefully BlackBerry 10 adds on these features just like RIM already has in App World for BlackBerry smartphones. Check out a video Phil did showing the new Parental Controls in action:

  1. Parental control great idea.
    This can also block wifi?
A longer password may be safer?
